Virgin Voyages Cruise Lingo 101: What the Heck is Loot, Bar Tab & More?

Virgin Voyages speaks its own language, and if you’re not familiar with terms like “Loot,” “Sailor Services,” or “The Groupie,” you might feel like you’re lost in a sea of Virgin Voyages lingo.
Here’s the good news — I’ve been cruising since 1993 and have taken over 30 cruises, including Virgin Voyages. When I took my second cruise on Valiant Lady, I finally cracked their code. So if you’ve ever searched “What does Loot mean on Virgin Voyages?” or “What’s included in the Splash of Romance package?” this post has your back.
And it's great that I have learned their terminology because my adventure continues with Virgin Voyages, I am booked on a 13-night sailing on Scarlet Lady, exploring the British Isles with stops in Scotland and Ireland. Virgin isn’t just for short Caribbean hops — they offer longer, immersive itineraries too!
Below, you’ll find a cheeky breakdown of Virgin Voyages terminology and acronyms — so you can board your ship feeling like a Rockstar (literally). Whether you're booking your first sailing or your fifth, we're with you from Shore to Cruise.

What They Call You and Your Crew
- Sailors – That’s you! Virgin doesn’t do “passengers.”
- Rockstars & Mega Rockstars – Sailors who book a suite, they also receive perks like an exclusive area on the ship and a fully stocked bar. Mega Rockstars are those sailing in the most exclusive suites and they get 24/7 attendants and next-level perks.
- Cabin Mates – The people you’re sharing a cabin with.
- Sailor Mates – Friends you meet on board! Add them in the app with a QR code to coordinate events and stay in touch.
- First Mates – Virgin Voyages’ term for travel advisors.
- Circles – Non-affinity groups that First Mates (travel advisors) set up for friends or themed group travel.
- A-Side & Z-Side – Instead of using the traditional nautical terms “port” and “starboard,” Virgin Voyages refers to the left and right sides of the ship as the A-side and Z-side. You’ll see this on signs and in the app, so don’t be caught off guard. (Tip: A-side is port/left, and Z-side is starboard/right.)
